Staying healthy during the holiday season is no small task. After all, traveling throws a wrench in your usual schedule, rich desserts abound, and freezing temps make finding motivation to do any sort of workout super difficult. It's not surprising that many of us put on a few pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day, but did you know the few weeks prior to the holiday season might actually be when you hit your lowest weight ever?
According to a September 2016 study published in The New England Journal of Medicine, many Americans are at their lowest weight of the entire year in the early fall. In fact, you'll probably hit your lowest weight this year in the coming weeks: October and early November were found be the best time for the average American's waistline. After that, you're likely to keep putting on weight until the end of the year, with the most notable increases occurring around Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. Ugh.
This seasonal weight gain isn't just a U.S. phenomenon, however: To conduct this study, researchers from Cornell University's Food and Brand Laboratory used Withings wearable fitness trackers to monitor the weight of 3,000 American, German, and Japanese participants. All three groups experienced the biggest weight gains during their respective holiday seasons — and their lowest average weights immediately beforehand.
Now, Americans only gain an average of about 1.32 pounds during the holiday season, but researchers do still recommend using these findings as motivation to stay ahead of the weight-gain curve — especially if you have a history of struggling with your weight.
